Choosing where to live at Texas A&M is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make as a student. Should you stay on campus in a traditional dorm, or move into an off-campus student apartment in College Station? Both options have their perks, but the right choice depends on your budget, lifestyle and how much independence you’re looking for. Let’s break it down so you can make the best call for your college experience.

1. Cost of On-Campus Housing vs. Off-Campus Apartments

On-campus housing at Texas A&M generally includes your room and a meal plan. This makes it simple, you pay one bill and don’t have to worry about groceries. But simplicity comes at a price. Dorms can run higher per square foot than apartments and meal plans are mandatory, which adds up fast.

Off-campus apartments give you more flexibility. You can split rent with roommates, shop for your own groceries and sometimes even save money compared to dorm living. Many apartments also bundle utilities and Wi-Fi into your monthly rent, which keeps budgeting easy.

The bottom line is that dorms are convenient but can be pricey. Apartments offer more bang for your buck, especially if you’re comfortable cooking and sharing costs with roommates.

2. Convenience and Proximity to Campus

Living on campus means you’re steps away from your classes, the library, the Rec and game days at Kyle Field. You don’t need to stress about driving or parking. Most first year students appreciate the proximity to campus and student activities, making it easy to get involved and meet new people. If you value convenience and being in the middle of campus life, this option may be the right fit for you.

Living off campus usually means a short drive, bike ride or bus trip to class. Many student apartments are less than 10 minutes from campus and are right along Aggie Spirit bus routes. Plus, you’ll be closer to restaurants, grocery stores and nightlife in College Station. Off-campus life gives you a little more independence, more space and the chance to explore more of what College Station has to offer outside the campus bubble.

3. Roommate Setups and Privacy

On-campus housing often means sharing a small room with at least one other person. Privacy is limited and space is tight. You’ll share a bathroom with your roommate or an entire floor, so personal space is more difficult to come by. For some students, this setup works because it keeps them close to friends and activities, but it can also be a big adjustment for others.

Off-campus apartments are usually designed for students, so you’ll often get your own bedroom and bathroom while still sharing a kitchen and living room with roommates. That balance of privacy and social life can be a game changer. It makes it easier to study, recharge and keep up with your own schedule without coordinating details with someone you are sharing a room with. There are still shared common areas and amenities around the building, creating a perfect balance of independence and connection.

4. Amenities and Lifestyle

On-campus housing offers built-in access to dining halls, campus events and RAs who plan activities. You’re surrounded by students, making it easy to make friends, join clubs and feel plugged into the Aggie community right away. Many first-year students appreciate that everything is within a short walk from each other, which makes settling into college life easier without the stress of commuting or coordinating transportation.

Off-campus apartments add extra amenities: resort-style pools, fitness centers, study lounges, coffee bars and even roommate-matching services. Common areas are built with students in mind, so you’ll find quiet study rooms for midterms, larger lounges for group projects, and amenities you simply won’t get in a traditional dorm. Plus, you can host friends more freely without dorm restrictions.

5. Flexibility and Independence

On-campus housing comes with rules like quiet hours, guest restrictions and no pets. You’ll also be required to move out during certain breaks, which means hauling your stuff back and forth. Dorms are designed for consistency and structure, so expect more oversight and less flexibility when it comes to how you use your space.

Off-campus apartments give you more independence. You sign a lease, keep your space year-round and have more freedom when it comes to decorating, cooking and having guests over. For students who want more control over their space and schedule, the extra autonomy can make a meaningful difference.

Which Option is Right for You?

If you’re a freshman looking for an easy way to adjust to college, living on campus might make sense since you’ll be closer to classes, events and other new students. On the other hand, if you’re ready for more independence, want more privacy or are hoping to stretch your budget, an off-campus apartment could be the better fit. On-campus housing offers structure and built-in community, while off-campus apartments give you more freedom, space and amenities. The choice comes down to what matters most to you: convenience and tradition or independence and lifestyle.

When it’s time to decide where to live, take the time to weigh the pros and cons of both options carefully. Choosing between on-campus housing and an off-campus apartment isn’t just about where you’ll sleep at night, it’s about shaping your daily college experience.
