For many Texas A&M students, finding the right roommate is one of the biggest parts of your housing search.
Especially in your first few years in College Station, the people you live with can shape your entire college experience, including your routines, your social life and even how you handle school stress.

Step 1: Know Your Must-Haves
Before you start looking for a roommate, take some time to figure out your own non-negotiables. Knowing what you want out of your housing situation can make the whole process a lot easier.
Start with a few basic questions:
- What’s my realistic monthly budget?
- Do I want to live on campus or off-campus?
- How many roommates am I actually comfortable living with?
Once you’ve nailed down those basics, you can get more specific.
If you’re planning to live on-campus, is there a certain dorm or area you’re hoping for? If you’re leaning toward off-campus housing, do you have a specific neighborhood or apartment community in mind?
These are just starting points, but they’ll help you narrow things down. The key is being honest about what matters most to you so you can find a living situation that actually fits your lifestyle.

Step 2: Ask Around!
If you need a roommate (or a few), don’t be afraid to make it known! Even if you think all of your friends already have roommates, they may still know people who are looking. Meeting friends-of-friends can be a great way to get to know new people who share the same preferences and lifestyle as you.
If asking close friends doesn’t work out, another good option is to reach out through an organization you’re part of.
Whether it’s a student org, a club sport, a church group or anything else on campus, you can usually post in a GroupMe or whatever messaging platform they use and let people know you’re looking for a roommate. If it’s a group you genuinely enjoy being part of, chances are you already have something in common with the people in it, which is a solid starting point.
Of course, being in the same organization doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be perfect roommates. But it’s an easy, low-pressure way to connect with people and start your search.
Step 3: Utilize Your Resources
No matter who you are or what kind of roommate you’re looking for, you can find a platform to search for roommates.
Facebook groups are an amazing place to search because it’s easy to get specific about the type of roommate you’re looking for. There are groups for incoming freshmen, transfer students, people in the same major and more!
Instagram can also be a great resource, especially for incoming freshmen. There are specific pages where people submit a photo and short bio to introduce themselves to new classmates, like @aggiefriends2026 or @2026aggies.
Some people also post Instagram photos announcing they’ll be attending Texas A&M, then students often DM each other who tag their photos with their class year (like #tamu26) when they’re looking for friends or roommates. Particularly for students interested in Greek life, Instagram is a popular way to meet people.
There are also numerous student-specific roommate searching websites, typically including a specific housing GroupMes advertising subleases, roommates and houses for Texas A&M. These group chats are another great way to find people you would want to live with.
Step 4: Make Sure It’s a Good Fit
One of the biggest factors in choosing the right roommate is making sure your lifestyles actually line up. You don’t have to be identical, but having similar habits can make everyday living a lot smoother.
Don’t be afraid to ask real questions about how someone lives. What time do they usually go to sleep and wake up? Are they super clean, kind of messy or somewhere in between? Do they like having people over often?

Setting clear expectations early makes a huge difference. When both people understand what’s expected around things like cleaning, guests, quiet hours, shared spaces and more, it’s much easier to avoid tension later on.
It’s also worth remembering that being great friends doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be great roommates. If your daily habits clash too much, it can put strain on the friendship. On the other hand, if your lifestyles align and you communicate well, living with close friends can end up being one of the best parts of your college experience.
If All Else Fails…
Random roommate matching is always an option!
Many on-campus and purpose-built student housing communities offer roommate matching. When you apply, you’ll usually fill out a short questionnaire about your lifestyle including things like your sleep schedule, cleanliness, study habits and how you feel about guests. Based on your answers, the leasing team pairs you with someone who has similar preferences.
You’ve probably heard both horror stories and success stories about random roommates, but it’s a completely valid choice, especially if you don’t already have someone in mind. Plenty of students end up meeting close friends this way.
